External Morphology Of Adrak:

Rhizome stout is tuberous with erect leafy stems.

Leaves: narrow, linear-lanceolate, glabrous.

Flowers: greenish with a small dark purplish black lip, in radical spikes.

Rhizome: Laterally compressed, irregularly branched. The outer surface is buff coloured or mealy white. The surface is generally shrivelled and has papery scales which exfoliate in small pieces. The inner surface is pale yellowish in colour, starchy and slightly fibrous. The fracture is short. Odour-strongly aromatic, with an agreeable odour. The taste is pungent.

Shunthi (Dried rhizome)- Essential oil, pungent constituents (gingerol and shogaol), resinous matter and starch. (A.P.I Volume I).

Ardrak: Volatile Oil containing Cineole zingiberol, and sesquiterpene like zingiberene, bisabolene and sesquiphellandrene, gingerol in the oleo-resin. (A.P.I Volume II).

  • Rasa: Katu
  • Guna: Laghu, Snigdha- Shunthi, Guru, Ruksha, Tikshna-Ardraka.

Action Of Adrak on Dosa, Dhatu, Mala:

Dosha: By Katu rasa and Ushna virya Kaphahara, By Madhura Vipaka and Ushna virya-Vatashamana.

Dhatu: Due to its Madhura vipaka, it is dhatuvardhaka (All Dhatus).

It does the pachana of Rasa dhatugatadoshas and is dhatvagnivardhaka. By Ushna guna it is raktavardhaka, by katu rasa it is medodhatugata kapha and kledahara.
