AGNIMANDYA (IMPAIRED DIGESTION)

AGNIMANDYA (IMPAIRED DIGESTION) is a condition wherein the digestive fire (Agni) becomes weak or impaired. The complete nutrition of the body occurs through the end products of digestion. So when digestive fire becomes weak, it leads to the production of Ama (toxin), and also there is less production of nutrients. So in Ayurveda, Agni has been given prime importance, as it is the cause of health and disease.

Causes of AGNIMANDYA (IMPAIRED DIGESTION)

  • Very dry food
  • Heavy meals
  • Half cooked food
  • Cold food and cold drinks
  • Excessive drinking of water
  • Fasting
  • Suppression of natural urges

Symptoms of AGNIMANDYA (IMPAIRED DIGESTION)

(A) General Symptoms of Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion)

  • Heaviness of abdomen
  • Flatulence
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Difficulty in digestion
  • Loss of appetite
  • Chest burn
  • Diarrhea
  • Disorders due to malnutrition-
  • anemia
  • edema

(B) Vataja Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion) Symptoms

Vataj Agni is Vishama, kashaya vaktra, Adhmana, Atopa, Vibandha, abdominal pain or discomfort during digestion, Urdhva Vata (belching).

(C) Pittaja Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion) Symptoms

Teerva Urodaha, amlodgara, chardi, hrillasa, aruchi, tiktasyata, peeta trishna. drava mala pravritti, udara shula, avipaka, bhrama.

(D) Kapha Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion) Symptoms

Udara Gourava, bandha, aruchi, madhurasyana, amlodgara, mild chest burn, hrillasa, tandra.

Lab Investigations of Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion)

  • LFT
  • Pancreatic lipase
  • Endoscopy
  • Barium meal X ray
  • Barium enema X ray.

Diagnosis of Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion)

(a) Analyze the Dosha involved.

(b) Check whether the disease is due to Svatantra or paratantra.

(c) Agnipareeksha.

(d) Ashtavidha Pareeksha-Especially Jihva, Nadi, Pureesha.

(e) Abdominal examination-Look for flatulence, hard abdomen, tenderness, enlargement of the liver, spleen, etc.

(f) PR examination-Presence of pile mass

Ayurvedic Treatment of Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion)

(a) Mandagni associated with hard stool and difficulty in defecation- Salavana Ghrita during Madhyabhakta Kala.

(b) Rukshajanya-Deepaniya Ghrita or Taila.

(c) Atisnehajanya-Churna, Arishta, Asava.

(d) Udavartajanya-Niruha and Sneha Basti.

(e) Doshavriddhijanya-Shodhana and Shamana.

(f) Vyadhi Muktajanya-Deepaniya Ghrita.

(g) Upavasajanya-Peyadi krama.

(h) Due to chronic disease-Mamsa Rasa with Amla Dravya (Ci. 204- 210).

Vataja Agnimandya

Vatanulomana, dipana, snigdha-lavana-amla-madhura-ushna dravya should be given

Sakshara lavanayukta ghritapana is beneficial.

If no improvement by the abovesaid treatment, then sneha virechana followed by niruha and anuvasana are definitely useful.

Pittaja Agnimandya

If the drava guna of pitta is causing agnimandya, then by virechana it should be eliminated.

Then pitta shamaka, madhura-shita-tikta rasa dipaniya dravya which are avidahi should be given in the form of sneha, churna,Asava, etc.

Kaphaja Agnimandya

Vamana followed by katu-amla-tikta dravya prayoga.

In durbala and krisha rogi, alternate use of ruksha and snigdha dravya along with depana dravya is beneficial.

Treatment of Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion)

Panchakarma for Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion)

  • Pachana-Panchakola choorna 2-3 gm 3 times a day.
  • Snehana-Sukumara Ghrita.
  • Svedana-Bashpa Sveda.
  • Vamana-Madhanaphaladi Yoga (In Kaphaja Agnimandya).
  • Virechana-Trivrit Leha 30-40gm or Avipatikara Churna (In Pittaja Agnimandya).
  • Niruha Dashamula Kshara Basti (In Vataja Agnimandya).

Shamana Chikitsha For Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion)

Drug of Choice:

Sama Matra Shukta Ardraka (equal quantty of ginger and fermented sour liquids).

Main Drugs:

Shunthi, Pippali, Maricha, Chitraka, Shankha Bhasma. Single drugs: Jiraka, Shunthi, Pippali, Maricha, Chitraka, Matulunga, Chavya, Draksha, Saindhava, Shankha Bhasma.

General Formulations

  • Haritaki + Shunthi or Haritaki + Saindhava (B.R.).
  • Yava Kshara with Shunthi Churna with hot water (C.D.).
  • Shunthi Churna with Ghrita and hot water (C.D.)
  • Intake of Manda with Hingu and Sauvarchala cures Vishamagni and Mandagni (C.D.).
  • Chewing of Ardraka and Lavana before meals is best for curingAgnimandya (C.D.).

Diet and Lifestyle for Agnimanndya (Impaired Digestion)

Pathya

  • Planning of diet is most essential in dyspepsia because the root cause is faulty intake of diet.
  • Old rice, munga dal, rice gruel, buttermilk, lemon juice, cow’s ghee, fresh ginger, fresh garlic, black salt, and cumin seeds.
  • Light food in moderate quantity.
  • Take fresh food in warm conditions.
  • Drink warm water or medicated water after the meal, which helps in digestion.
  • Give at least 3 hours of gap between two meals.
  • Regular exercise.

Apathya

  • Avoid heavy, cold, too much oily food.
  • Avid drinking of water just before meal.
  • Avoid day sleep after meal.
  • Avoid heavy meals at night time.
  • Don’t take anything in between except liquids.
  • Suppression of the natural urges.
  • Excessive or scanty and also taken too early or too late.
  • Avoid anxiety, worry, anger, etc.
