Amalaki: Benefits, Dosage, Indication of Amalaki, and Side Effects

Amalaki is used in ayurvedic medicine to heal a variety of ailments. This herb is often used as an anti-oxidant, anti-aging agent, and immune system booster.

The word Amalaki translates to “fruit that cures” in Sanskrit. The fruit has been found to promote longevity and contains a high amount of Vitamin C.

Basonym of Drug:

Emblica Officinalis

Emblica: Old generic name from the Sanskrit words ‘Amlika’ and ‘Amalaki’

Officinalis: medicinal, recognized in Pharmacopeia.

आमलकी = आमलते धारयतिशरीरम्, मलधारणे।

It does the shareera dharana.

Main synonyms:

I. Based On Plant :

i. Grows in Korangadesha : Korangaka.

कोरङ्गक = कोरङ्गदेशेभवा ।

II. Based On Fruit :

i. Round: Vruttaphala

वृत्तफल = वृत्तं फलमस्याः ।

ii. Weighs one Kola: Kola

कोल = कोलप्रमार्णफलमस्य ।।

iii. It has six rasas: Shadrasa

षड्रस = षड्रसाः सन्त्यस्याम् ।

iv. It is Sheeta in virya: Shitaphala

शीतफल = शीतवीर्यफलम्।

v. Fruit juice is useful in treatment: Jatiphalarasa.

जातीफलरस = जातीः प्रशस्तः फलरसोऽस्याः ।

vi. Fruiting is in poushyamasa: Tishyaphala

तिष्यफलं = तिष्येपौष्यमासेफलंजायतेऽस्या।।

i. Use of amalaki purifies the body: Amala

अमल = न मलं तिष्ठत्यनया।

ii. It has rasayana karma: Amrutaphala, Amruta.

अमृतफलम् = अमृतवत् रसायनंफलमस्या।
अमृता = अमृतवत् गुणकारिणिरसायनत्वात् नम्रियन्तेजना अकाले यस्य सेवनेत्यर्थः ।। 

iii. Does the shareera dharana: Aamalaki

आमलकी = आमलते धारयतिशरीरम्, मलधारणे।

iv. Maintains youthfulness: Vayastha

वयस्था = वयस्तरुणंस्थापयतीति वयस्थापनीत्यर्थः ।

v. Sustains and promotes dhatus: Dhatri.

धात्री = धात्रीवत् देहस्यधारणपोषणकरी, स्तन्यमिवफलरसोपीयते अस्या ।

vi. Prolongs life: Vayastha

वयस्था = वयसे आयुषेहिता आयुष्येत्यर्थः ।

vii. Has vrushya karma: Vrushya

वृष्या = शुक्रवर्धनी ।।

viii. Useful in many ways: Shivam.

शिवम् = कल्याणकारि ।

Botanical Name and Family of Indian gooseberry

Botanical Name: Emblica officinalis Gaertn.

Family: Euphorbiaceae

Classification of Dravya (Gana) as in Charaka and Sushruta:

Charaka: Vayasthapana, Virechanopaga, Jvaraghna, Kasaghna, Kusthaghna.

Sushruta: Triphala, Parushakadi, Amalakyadi.

External Morphology of Amalaki Tree:

A deciduous small or middle-sized tree with a crooked trunk and spreading branches.

The bark is greenish-grey, peeling off in conchoidal flakes.

Leaves subsessile, closely set along the branchlets, light green, glabrous, narrowly linear.

Flowers greenish yellow, in axillary fascicles, on the leaf-bearing branchlets.

Fruit: Fleshy. globose, with six obscure vertical furrows, pale yellow, of three 2-seeded crustaceous cocci. Seeds:6, 3-gonous.

Important Phytoconstituents of Amalaki Tree:

Fresh fruit pulp – Ascorbic acid and tannins,

Rasa: Lavanavarjita Amlapradhana Pancharasa

Guna: Guru, Ruksha, Sheeta

Virya: Sheeta

Vipaka: Madhura

Amalaki Action on Dosa, Dhatu, Mala:

Amalaki is Tridosha hara;

हन्तिवातं तदम्लत्वात् पित्तंमाधुर्यशैत्यतः । कफंरूक्षकषायत्वात् फलंघात्र्यखिदोषजित्।। (भा.प्र.)

By Amla rasa it is Vatahara, pittahara by madhura rasa and sheeta virya. It acts as Kapha hara by its rukshaguna and Kashaya rasa. Thus, it is tridosha hara.

Dhatu: It is rakta prasadaka and does the shodhana of all the dhatus. By Dhatu Shodhana,

it makes the dhatuprashasta and hence is a rasayana.

By Madhura vipaka it does the Shukravridhi, hence acting as vrushya.

Spasmolytic, mild CNS depressant, Hypolipidaemic, Antiatherosclerotic, Antimutagenic, Antimicrobial, Antioxidant, Immunomodulatory. Antifungal, Antitumour, Hypoglycaemic, Antiinflammatory, Antibacterial, Antiulcer, Adrenergic potentiating, HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitory action. (CCRAS Data- base Volume III).

1. External Benifits of Amalaki:

1. In case of vrana in mukha and kantha: Indian gooseberry swarasa and madhuka kwatha added with madhu is used as gandusha. (B.P chi 60/50).

2. Palitya: The kalka of mandura, amalaka and Japapushpa is applied on hair before taking bath. (V.M 57/91).

3. Netraroga: The rasakriya of Amalaki and Rasanjana mixed with madhu cures vataja and pittaja netraroga, Timira and Patala. (Ch.chi. 26/250, V.M. 61/172).

1. Murcha: Ghruta cooked with Haritaki kwatha or Indian gooseberry swarasa. (Su. U 46/19)

2. Medhya: Tila and Amalaki churna with Madhu, ghruta in the morning for a month. (V.M 20).

3. Arshas: Phalarishta (Ch.chi 14/148-52), Kanakaristha (Ch.chi. 14/158-68).

4. Pittajashula: Amalaki churna with madhu. (V.M 26/25-26)

5. Pandu: Indian gooseberry swarasa and Ikshu in the form of Mantha. (Su.u 46/8)

12. Vajikarana: Amalaka churna has to be given bhavana with Indian gooseberryswarasa and then it has to be mixed with madhu, ghruta and given to the patient. After the intake of this, patient has to consume milk. (Su Chi 26/24, V.M 40/8-9)

10-20 g of the drug, 5-10 ml of fresh juice (Fresh fruit), Dried fruit-3-6 g of the drug in powder form. (A.P.I Volume 1)
