The term “amla” means “sour,” which describes the fruit’s primary flavour. It belongs to the Euphorbeaceae family and has the generic names Emblica officinalis and Phyllanthus emblica. increases overall health and performance, aids in the body’s natural defence system development, promotes the immune system’s attempts to fight against infections, and aids the body in coping with stress.

What are the Ayurvedic properties of Amla?

Guna (qualities) – Guru – heaviness, Sheeta – coolant
Rasa (taste) – Has five tastes. – sour, sweet, bitter, astringent and pungent (all the five tastes, excluding salt). Sour is dominant taste.

The primary taste of gooseberry / Emblica officinalis fruits is sweetness, with secondary tastes of sourness and astringency.

The gooseberry fruit, also known as dhAtriphala, is tridoSha pacifying. It addresses the increased vAta through its sourness, and it appeases the aggravated pitta through its cold potency and sweetish taste. The dryness and astringent taste of the Embilica officinalis fruits address the aggravated kapha.

Gooseberry fruits are beneficial in patients with urinary ailments such as dysuria and are also safe to consume in prameha patients.

When taken on a regular basis, it relieves constipation. Gooseberries are a tonic that helps to maintain vision, physical strength, skin complexion, and eroticism.

It is a popular intelligence enhancer in the form of rasAyana chikitsa.

AmalakI is beneficial to patients suffering from itching, skin diseases, fever, uncontrollable thirst, burning sensations within the body’s channels, anorexia, and other conditions.

AmalakI fresh juice and raw fruits are cold in potency, tastier to drink, sweetish in taste, alleviate kapha doSha, and reduce fever and burning sensation. When taken in the prescribed dosage format and rasayana therapy modality, it promotes virility and increases the individual’s lifespan.

Amalaki Morphology (Phyllanthus emblica)

Amalaki is a small or medium-sized deciduous tree with leaves that are subsessile, obtuse, and finely acute.
Flowers are greenish yellowish in colour.
The fruits are globose and have six obscure vertical furrows.
There are 6 gonous seeds in total.

Amalaki can be found all over India. It can be found in abundance in the forests of North India, the Central Provinces, and South Indian states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is also grown in some areas due to its high medicinal value.

Chemical Constituents of Amalaki

Chebulinic Acid, Phyllantine, Zeatin Nucleotide, Zeatin, Phyllantidine, Zeatin Riboside, Benzenoid, Chebulagic Acid, and other Chemical Constituents are found in the plant.

Therapeutic Uses of Amla

Amalaki is a commonly used herb in Ayurvedic treatment due to its abundant natural availability and high medicinal value. Amalaki was regarded as one of the top Ayurvedic herbs by Acharyas such as Vagbhata and Caraka. Because it is readily available in homes, it can be used to treat a wide range of diseases.

In Diabetes (Prameha), 3-4 Amalaki fruits are taken and juice is extracted. It is then taken on a daily basis alongside Curcuma longa. Diabetes can be prevented.
In skin diseases (Kushta), Amalaki paste is applied to the skin. The paste is antiallergic and can treat skin infections.
5-7 Amalaki grapes are gathered and their juice is extracted in Fever (Jwara). It is then fried in ghee, and it works well to treat fever.
The fruits are taken and thoroughly ground for anaemia (Pandu). Once combined with honey, it is then eaten every day.
Amalaki is used as a purgative herb in combination with honey and sugar to treat bleeding disorders (Raktapitta).
Amalaki juice and Piper nigrum powder are used in Hiccough (Hikka). After that, it is ingested after being combined with honey.
Fresh fruits of Amalaki are gathered in Kamala (jaundice), and juice is produced from them. The mixture is then diluted with grape juice and administered orally in doses of 10 ml.

Amla For weight loss, weight gain

Amla helps with weight loss because it is full of minerals and antioxidants. Its powder, taken with a spoonful of honey two times a day before meals, is recommended for this purpose. Due to its anti-kapha properties, honey aids in weight loss and enhances the effects of amla.

For weight gain –
If amla powder is to be ingested, mix a teaspoon of it with a teaspoon of ghee before gulping it down with a cup of warm water. When eating amla fruit to gain weight, a teaspoon of ghee should be swallowed after each serving, followed by a cup of hot water. It does not result in weight gain when eaten with honey.

Amla for balance Vata

If you have a Vata imbalance, such as joint pain or gas, Amla can be combined with Sesame oil (gingelly oil). One teaspoon of amla and two teaspoons of sesame oil can be combined. If you dislike the taste of sesame oil, make a paste of amla powder and sesame oil and drink it with hot water.

1 teaspoon dried gooseberry powder is combined with 1 teaspoon sesame oil and served with lukewarm water. This is because lukewarm water is usually recommended after consuming sesame oil for better digestion.

Vata is more prominent in the evening. To balance Vata Dosha, take this remedy in the evening.
If necessary, 100 grammes of dry Amla powder can be combined with 100 mL of sesame oil. Store in a glass jar after thoroughly mixing. This can be taken in 1 – 2 teaspoons doses as needed.

Amla For balance Pitta

If you want to achieve Pitta balance, if you have digestive issues, or if you have skin problems like acne, you can consume Amla with ghee (clarified butter). One teaspoon of Amla churna with one teaspoon of clarified butter is a good starting point. After that, drink a glass of hot water.
1 teaspoon dried gooseberry powder is combined with 1 teaspoon ghee and drunk with lukewarm water. This is because lukewarm water is usually recommended after consuming ghee for better digestion.

Because ghee and Amla are both Pitta balancing, this remedy is best taken in the afternoon. The afternoon is dominated by Pitta.

If necessary, 100 grammes of dry Amla powder can be combined with 100 grammes of ghee. Mix thoroughly before storing in a glass jar. This can be taken in 1 – 2 teaspoons doses as needed.
Keep in mind that Amla with ghee can cause slight weight gain if consumed in excess.

Amla for Kapha balance

Amla churna with honey can help with Kapha balance and diseases like obesity and respiratory disease.
If none of these are available, simply dissolve amla powder in water and drink.
So, in one way or another, include some Amla in your diet.
Amalaki with honey helps you lose weight. Obese people will benefit from this remedy.

Kapha is most prominent in the morning. If you have high Kapha and want to take Amlaki, take it first thing in the morning with honey.
If necessary, 100 grammes of dry Amla powder can be combined with 100 grammes of honey. Store in a glass jar after thoroughly mixing. This can be taken whenever needed in 1 – 2 teaspoons per day.

Amla for Pitta and Kapha Dosha –

Amla is combined with two other herbs, Haritaki and Vibhitaki, to form the combination known as Triphala. Triphala helps to balance the Pitta and Kapha Doshas.

Amla benefits the skin and eyes.

Amla for better skin quality and complexion –
A teaspoon of Amla is combined with half a strand of saffron and drank with water.
Amla is mixed with a quarter teaspoon of turmeric and consumed with water.

Triphala is more effective than Amla in improving eye sight when compared to Dhatri. As a result, it makes more sense to take Triphala than Amalaki for better vision.

Amla powder benefits grey hair and respiratory health.

Amla powder for grey hair is made by combining equal parts Gooseberry powder and Bhringaraj powder. This is taken in half a teaspoon twice a day after food with water for a month.

Amla powder is beneficial to respiratory health when combined with cinnamon and turmeric.

Amla combined with ghee and turmeric is beneficial for allergic rhinitis and hives.

Amla chatpata is another recipe that combines Amla with spices such as cinnamon, ginger, and jaggery.

Amla consumption in the winter –
It might make skin and hair more dry because it is a natural cooler. It is eaten with sesame oil to offset this impact.

Use of Amla in Rasayana

Amla is a common ingredient in several Ayurvedic anti-aging products, including Chyawanprash and Brahma Rasayana. Even the amla fruit by itself is a fantastic anti-aging remedy.
Charaka provides the following explanation of how to use amla fruit for rejuvenation benefits:
Charaka Chikitsa Sthana, 1.3/9-14 as a reference

At the end of the year, on a suitable day of the white fortnight (15 days, leading to the full moon day) of Pushya (January–February), Magha (February–March), or Phalguna (March–April), observe fast for 3 days and enter into a garden of Amalaki – Indian gooseberry fruit – Emblica officinalis.
This person must have been living among the cows for the entire year, subsisting solely on cow milk and mentally
The next step was for him to ascend an Amalaki tree covered in large fruits.
He should remain there, holding one of these fruits in his hand, reciting the Brahma Mantra (Omkara chanting), till the fruit becomes impregnated with Amruta (Ambrosia).

Amalaki in TakraDhara

Amla is used in the traditional Ayurvedic Takradhara method, which is intended to cure psoriasis, hypertension, and other conditions. Here, medicated buttermilk is applied to a specific area of the body for a predetermined amount of time.
Amla is used as described below to create the medicated buttermilk (Takra).

Water and Amalaki powder are consumed in the specified amounts.
They are cooked over a medium flame on the stove until just 38 tola (456 grammes) worth of water is left.

Grey hair cures with amla (consult your doctor for the right advice)

2 tbsp amla powder and 1 cup coconut oil are the ingredients for amla.
In a pan, bring coconut oil to a boil before adding this powder. Heat until a deep brown colour appears on the mixture. Use this oil on a regular basis and keep it in a bottle.

Almond Oil with Amla: Warm the oil, then stir in the powder. Allow it to boil until the colour turns dark. Pouring the oil into a bottle after it has cooled.

Amla with Lemon Juice: To form a smooth paste, combine gooseberry powder, a few drops of lemon juice, and one tablespoon of curd. Put this paste on your scalp, then wait 45 minutes. With warm water, remove it. Continue using this cure every other day until you see improvements.

Historical information about Amalaki

It was included in bathwater throughout the Vedic era. Amalaki has been regarded by Charaka as the top anti-aging plant.
Amalaki’s primary flavour is sourness. Pitta is typically aggravated by sour tastes, whereas amla balances Pitta.
Despite having a mildly sweet flavour, amla is a common element in Ayurvedic medications like Mehari Choorna and Nishamalaki Choorna.

Chyawanprash’s primary ingredient is Amlaki.
Aside with the salt taste, amalaki has five flavours.

Amla Rings – Water Purification

Ancient people prepared rings that were placed in wells using amla wood. It was so submerged that two to four of these bing rings were submerged well down in the well. This was done to clean the water. The Amalaki wood may remove dirt and bacteria from water by absorbing them. Thus, the Amla rings in the wells made the well water potable.

Iyer, Hariharan not limited to Amla Rings only. There is a Malayalam adage that says “Kshamayute Nellippalaka” etc., which translates to “Amla Floor of Patience” and indicates that you have arrived at the bottom! People used to place an Amalaki Wood Flooring at the bottom of the well.

Amla Pooja (worship) by Hindu

The ninth day of the Hindu month of Karthika is known as Amla Navami (Awla Navami). It takes place from October through November. The Deepavali festival of light is observed throughout the same month.

On this day, worship is performed for the Amla tree alongside friends and family. This celebration is often referred to as Akshaya Navami.

In India’s middle and northern regions, it is more widely observed. This worship is being done to ask for blessings that will bring about peace in the home and with children.

On this day, God Sri Krishna put an end to all childhood activities. The Dwapara Yug began on this date.

FAQs on Amalaki

Is fresh or frozen amla equally as good?
Fresh fruit of any kind is always preferable. The Amlaki fruit is seasonal, though, so it isn’t available all year long. As a result, for convenience’s sake, it can be frozen and used as needed. Although it is not as delicious as fresh amla, it is still usable.

Is milk and amla incompatible?
Yes, because Amla causes milk to curdle, all sour foods and herbs, including amalaki, are incompatible with milk.
Solution? You must wait at least 30 minutes before consuming milk and amla. If you are prescribed Amla capsules and Turmeric capsules with milk, for instance, take the Amalaki capsules first, eat your meal, and then take the Turmeric capsules with milk. The separation of the milk and amla will be ensured by doing this.

Is milk should be avoided when consuming amla?
Vagbhata recommends combining amla powder with milk in the Astanga Hridaya’s vajikarana chapter.
The use of long pepper, amla, processed with amla juice, sugar candy, and honey is mentioned in Ashtanga Hrudaya, Uttaratantra, Vajikarana Chapter (40th chapter), verse 27. – The product in this case is exclusively utilised as Anupana; milk is not used in the product’s preparation. In addition, by adding honey and sugar to candy, the result would become sweet rather than sour. Milk’s validity as an after-meal beverage is thus supported.

Is amla a liver toxicity? Hepatotoxic tannins are said to be hidrolizable tannins in Wikipedia.
Only in extremely high doses, equivalent to 20–30 amla fruits daily, would tannins be hazardous. However, nobody consumes so much amla at once.

Are amla pills, capsules, and powder equally effective?
Compared to tablets and capsules, amalaki powder is quickly absorbed and begins to work. The full herb is less frequently present in capsules than just a few selected fruit extracts.
The whole plant is preferred by Ayurveda over extracts.

Can you take amla all year long?
