Introduction to Ahiphen

The opium poppy, Ahiphen, has two beneficial components: poppy seeds, which are frequently used in the preparation of numerous foods, and opium, the fruit’s latex exudate, which is used as a narcotic.

This herb is also used to make morphine. An opioid called morphine is used to treat moderate to severe pain, but when taken improperly, it can lead to addiction and overdose, which can result in abrupt death. Poppy seeds are one of the most effective herbs used as a sedative and analgesic.

Morphology of Opium

Papaver Somniferum is an annual herb that can reach a height of 100 cm.
Herbal plant is greyish green in colour, with sparsely covered stems and leaves covered in small and soft hair.
The leaves are lobed and clasp at the stem’s base.
This herb’s flowers typically have four white, mauve, and red petals and are more than 120 mm in diameter.
Fruits are round capsules, and when the plant is wounded, it emits white latex.

Distribution of Ahiphen

Although it is grown in Asia, Europe, and China, this annual herb is native to the eastern Mediterranean. This plant is being grown in the United Kingdom for medical purposes.

Chemical constituents of Papaver somniferum:

About 25 alkalouds are present in crude opium. Morphine (10%), Codein (0.05%), Papaverene, Narcotine, Meconic acid, and Apomorphine are some of them.

Morphime, codeine, and baine are phenanthres.

Isoquinolines – Papararines (1%) and narcotine (6 percent )

  • Anti-cancerous seeds and leaves are used to treat cancer.
  • Ulcers are treated with seed paste.
  • Root decoction is an excellent remedy for preventing tumours and hard knots in joints.
  • Because of its vyavayi and vikashi properties, this herb is also used to treat alcohol withdrawal and blood poisoning.

Ahiphen yurvedic Indiacation

  • In the treatment of dandruff (Daruna), a paste made from Ahiphena seeds and milk is applied to the scalp.
  • Diarrhoea (Atisara) – Ahiphena is taken in combination with Strychnosnuxvomica bark and honey.
  • Ahiphena seeds and milk are ground into a paste and applied to the skin to treat skin diseases (Kushta).
  • Insomnia (Anidra) – Ahiphena latex is used to treat insomnia in low doses.
  • In Pain (Sula) – Ahiphena latex or fruit is used to relieve pain.
  • Cough (Kasa) – Ahiphena latex is used to treat cough.
  • In debilitating diseases (Dourbalya), Ahiphena seeds are taken with milk.

Morphine, a medication derived from poppies, is used to relieve excruciating pain from cancer.
Cough is treated with codeine, another opium derivative. It is used in linctus form. But because to its addictiveness, linctus codeine cough syrup addiction is a widespread problem in India.
Muscle relaxants like papaverine are utilised.

Poppy seed Use for sleeping

1 gramme of poppy seed is boiled for 1 minute in half a cup of milk. It is usually consumed at night. This treatment can be continued for one month.

Recipe of poppy seeds

A tablespoon of the recipe is ground by combining a small amount of water and a teaspoon of grated dry coconut. This mixture paste is heated to just below boiling with a tablespoon of jaggery (unrefined sugar).
This is taken at night in a teaspoon dose or with milk to induce sleep and to have an aphrodisiac effect.

Method of Ahiphen purification

Ahiphena Shodhana: opium Poppy purification – It is dissolved in water, filtered, and gently heated until all of the water evaporates. This paste is ground with ginger juice 21 times before being dried and preserved in the shade. (24 Rasa Tarangini / 237-239)

Remedy for toxicity

Gotu kola is used in Thailand to treat opium toxicity. For a few months, greater doses of gotu kola paste or water decoction are given for this reason.

Dosage of Ahiphen

  • 0.2 gm of morphine for acute angina and pain.
  • 30 to 50 mg of exudate
  • 1 to 3 grammes of khas khas
  • 0.5 g of codein
  • 1 to 4 drops of poppy seed oil
  • A fatal dose of more than 2 gm of morphine results in sleepiness, cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and ultimately death.

Side effect of Opium

Opium (fruit extract) should be used only under medical supervision and in extremely low doses. It is a highly addictive narcotic that should be avoided during pregnancy, lactation, in the elderly, and in children.
It should be avoided if you have chronic urinary tract problems, gastroenteritis, or nephritis.
Poppy seeds are commonly used in food and are completely safe to consume.
